Who We Were
The titles aren’t the point. What the training built is.
Jeremy retired as a Coast Guard Captain after 25 years of making operational calls where honest information wasn’t a preference; it was the job. Search and rescue, marine safety oversight, emergency response- environments where vague assessments get people hurt and sugarcoating what didn’t work means the mistake gets made again. He learned to look at things clearly and say what he found.
Shana flew Coast Guard helicopters for 25 years, operating in the same environment before her career grew into joint operations with the Department of Defense. Pilots have a strict relationship with truth- you can’t soften a weather report, and you can’t wish a mechanical problem into something manageable.
That background translates to what we do today. Jeremy and Shana apply that same rigorous analysis to their travel research. Jeremy looks at the points and miles and does the actual math to reach his conclusion. When Shana says a place is worth it, she’s thought about it. When she says “skip it,” she’s already done the cost-benefit.
We haven’t stopped. The subject matter just changed.
How We Travel
Retired, in our early 50s, well past our backpacking days, but nowhere near the luxury hotel crowd either. The benchmark is somewhere around $275 a night: comfortable, not excessive. We take a handful of meaningful trips a year, use points strategically when the value makes sense, and write honest accounts of what actually happened (including what didn’t).
No tourism board copy. No fake positive endings. No pretending the elevator wasn’t slow.
The points and miles system is real and worth understanding. We put in the research. Jeremy focuses on airline programs, routing logic, and booking strategy; Shana evaluates hotel programs and has the final word on whether a property or experience actually earns what it costs. Between us, the options get modeled and the call gets made honestly.

Two pilots. One points strategy. No North Dakota.
We’re both retired Coast Guard helicopter pilots- Jeremy’s career grew from the cockpit into command, retiring as a Captain after over 25 years. Shana’s grew from flying into joint operations with the Department of Defense.
Jeremy’s first trip to Europe was at 16. Thirty years in the military kept him moving and kept expanding what “travel” meant. Shana’s first trip to Europe was at 47 (and she’s been building reasons to go back ever since).
Between us: 49 states for Jeremy, 43 for Shana. Both still circling North Dakota without a compelling reason to land.
Planners by training, but we’ve booked flights to cities without a single reservation and figured it out when we landed. Five kids out the door. The freedom is recent, and we’re using it.
